The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) is a member of the Leibniz Association and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. SGN conducts natural history research with almost 800 employees and research institutions in six federal states. Within SGN, the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK F) explores the interactions between biodiversity, climate, and society. For the EU-funded research project “Essential Variables Workflows for Resource Efficiency and Environmental Management (GEOEssential)” , we invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (TV-H E13, 100%, 28 months) GEOEssential is one of the four ERA-Planet projects, supported by the EU Horizon 2020 Programme. GEOEssential aims to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) by evaluating existing structures and platforms, and by providing new applications in the field of Earth Observation (EO) to monitor the progresses in environmental conditions towards policy targets. It will create cross-thematic workflows to evaluate, predict and monitor natural resources with Earth Observation tools, in particular in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). SBiK-F leads the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning work package. In close collaboration with other institutes, this work package will map the relevant data landscape and institutions, develop specific workflows for indicators, evaluate the application of EO products to inform dynamic models, review the exiting policy and reporting needs, and finally transfer the annotated processing services and workflows for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and services to the GEOEssential project dashboard.

The GEOEssential project is funded for 36 months, starting September 2017. The outcomes will be open access and made readily available for the project steering committee, and the EU Commission.

The work will be conducted in close cooperation with Dr. Aidin Niamir and Prof. Dr. Thomas Hickler. Scientific publications are planned in addition. The extension of a successful cooperation is envisioned in upcoming projects. Your tasks: Extensive analysis of SDGs, IPBES, CBD and other relevant set of indicators Analysis of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and its tools to discover, access, and process EO data suitable for the selected indicators Develop workflows and processing services to use Copernicus Land Monitoring Services to drive and evaluate, biodiversity (e.g. distribution, richness) and ecosystem service models (e.g. carbon, crops, and forestry) Formalize processing services and workflows + annotation and documentation Contribute to a future strategy for maximizing the application of Copernicus products for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem functioning Preparation of scientific publications and discussion of the results at national and international conferences Support the workpackage leaders with the management and administration tasks Your profile: You hold a PhD degree in Earth Observation and Geo-Information Science, Geography, Environmental Science or a related field in Biodiversity and Ecosystem research. You have an in-depth knowledge in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem services research and have an overview on global EO products related to biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring. You have strong experience in handling EO products and large spatio-temporal data analysis. Salary and benefits are in accordance with a full-time public service position in Germany (E13 TV-H, 100%). The contract shall start immediately but no later than March 1st, 2018 and will be limited to 28 months .
