Please submit an abstract to the American Geophysical Union (AGU) session “Development of Essential Biodiversity Variables: Progress and Challenges”.  This year, the AGU Fall Meeting will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, from December 11-15.

Information on the session abstract and conveners are below.  Abstracts are due Wednesday, August 2, at 11:59 PM EDT and can be submitted here: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm17/gc/papers/index.cgi?sessionid=25109.

Session Description: Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) are being developed by the Group on Earth Observation’s (GEO) Biodiversity Observation Network (BON). EBVs are those variables required to study, report, and manage biodiversity change, focusing on status and trends in elements of biodiversity. Candidate EBVs, which cover terrestrial and aquatic realms, include phenology, ecosystem extent and fragmentation, and species occurrence (see http://geobon.org/essential-biodiversity-variables for a full list).  Because Earth observing satellites make frequent, repeated observations across the globe, they are often a key input to numerous EBVs. Although this session will focus on EBVs with a significant remote sensing component, we welcome any EBV development abstract, as EBVs should be measurement agnostic. The goal for this session is to bring together those who are thinking about EBV development to share ideas, progress, challenges, and lessons learned, with the ultimate aim of moving forward a collective set of EBVs and identifying observing requirements.
