At the Department of Geography, Working Group Environmental Informatics, University of Marburg, Germany, Prof. Dr. Thomas Nauss, we offer a position of a Research Assistant (Postdoc) at the earliest possible date for a limited period of 4 years if no qualifying periods are to be included and with the option of an extension after successful evaluation.

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H), pay scale E 13. In the case of civil service qualifications, the appointment can also be made as academic counselor (Akad. Rätin/Rat, A13 HBesG).

The tasks include scientific services in research and teaching, in particular in the exploration of cross-scale methods for biodiversity and environmental monitoring using field survey information and remote sensing data. Teaching subjects are related to remote sensing, GIS, data analysis and similar within B.Sc. and M.Sc. study programs as well as in teacher education.

Administrative tasks encompass the co-management of the working group. It is a short-term qualification position aiming in the eligibility for a professorship (habilitation or habilitation equivalent). In the context of the assigned tasks, the possibility of independent scientific work is offered which serves the own scientific qualification. The time limit is based on §2 para. 1 sent. 2 WissZeitVG.


A completed academic degree (diploma, master or equivalent) and a (shortly completed) doctorate with clear reference to the field of research outlined above are required.

Knowledge and experience in a programming language typically used in environmental science (e.g. R) and publications with a clear focus on the above field of research in internationally recognized journals are mandatory. Experience in machine learning is beneficial. The readiness for own scientific qualification in the sketched research field and effective self and team management is expected.
